Outlook Won't Let You Sign In? Fix It by Symptom
"Can't sign in" is four different problems wearing the same error message. Find the one that matches your screen, then do only that fix.
Start here: which one is happening to you?
Each symptom has a different cause. Doing the wrong fix wastes time, or makes a lock last longer.
If you can't sign in to Outlook, the cause is almost always one of four things, and each needs a different fix. Match your symptom first:
- The page loops back to sign-in. A blocked cookie, not a wrong password. Clear cookies for the Microsoft sign-in domains.
- Your password is refused but you know it's right. A stale saved credential is being submitted before you finish typing. Clear the saved login on that device.
- You see a message about unusual activity. The account is temporarily locked. Verify once, then wait. Retrying makes the lock last longer.
- Only the phone app fails. A stale token. Remove the account from the app and add it again. No mail is lost.
Not sure which? Open a private browsing window and sign in. If it works, the fault is stored data on your device. If it fails the same way, the fault is the account itself.
- A private window is the fastest way to tell an account problem from a device problem.
- Sign-in loops are cookies, not credentials.
- "Wrong password" that is not wrong usually means a saved credential is stale.
- A locked account cannot be fixed by retrying. Retrying extends the lock.
Try This First: The Two-Minute Test
Before changing any settings, find out whether the problem is your account or your device. This tells you which half of the page to read and takes about two minutes.
- Open a private or incognito windowCtrl+Shift+N in Chrome or Edge, Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox. A private window ignores every stored cookie and saved password on the device.
- Go to outlook.com and sign in normallyType the address yourself rather than using a bookmark, because a stale bookmark can point at an old sign-in URL.
- Note what happensIf it works, your account is fine and the fault is stored data on your device. If it fails the same way, the problem is with the account itself.
Is the Sign-In Page You're On Actually Microsoft's?
Before you type a password into any page that is refusing you, confirm the address is genuinely Microsoft's. Fake sign-in pages are a common reason people "can't sign in": the password is going somewhere else entirely. This checks the domain against Microsoft's real sign-in hosts, runs entirely in your browser, and sends nothing anywhere.
Check a sign-in address
Paste the address from your browser's address bar. We check the domain only.
Why Does Outlook Keep Asking Me to Sign In?
A sign-in loop almost never means your password is wrong. It means the browser accepted your sign-in, then could not store or read the session cookie that proves it, so the next page load looks like a fresh visitor.
- Clear cookies for the Microsoft sign-in domains onlyYou need
live.com,outlook.comandmicrosoftonline.com. Clearing cookies for one domain and not the others is the most common reason this fix appears not to work. - Allow third-party cookies for those domainsMicrosoft's sign-in passes you between hosts, so a strict third-party cookie block breaks the handoff mid-flow.
- Turn off extensions for one attemptAd blockers and privacy extensions are the usual culprits. Test in a private window with extensions disabled rather than uninstalling anything.
- Check the clock on your deviceIf the system time is wrong by more than a few minutes, the session token looks expired the moment it is issued, and you loop forever.
Password Rejected but You Know It Is Correct?
When a password you are certain about is refused, the usual cause is that something else is answering for you. Windows, your browser, or a mail client is submitting an old saved credential before you get a chance to type.
- Remove stored Microsoft credentials on WindowsOpen Credential Manager, choose Windows Credentials, and delete entries mentioning MicrosoftAccount, Outlook, Office or WindowsLive. Restart afterwards so a clean token is issued.
- Clear the saved password in your browserAn autofilled old password is submitted faster than you can notice it happening.
- Type the password somewhere visible firstType it into the address bar, confirm it reads correctly, then copy it across. This catches a stuck Caps Lock or the wrong keyboard layout, which are far more common than people expect.
- Only then use the official reset flowIf it still fails, reset at
account.live.com/password/reset. Resetting first is tempting, but it hides whether a stale credential was the real cause.
Is Your Account Locked or Blocked?
Microsoft locks an account when its systems see something unusual, such as sign-ins from a new country, many rapid failed attempts, or activity that resembles automation. A lock is a safety measure, not a fault on your part.
| What you see | What it means | What clears it |
|---|---|---|
| "We noticed unusual activity" | Temporary security hold | Identity verification by code |
| Verification code never arrives | Recovery contact is out of date | The account recovery form |
| "This account has been locked" | Longer hold after repeated failures | Waiting, then verifying once |
| Sign-in works then immediately ends | Session revoked by a security action | Password reset, then re-verify |
Can't Sign In on the Outlook Mobile App?
If the website signs you in but the app does not, the account is fine and the app's stored token is the problem. Removing the account from the app deletes that token. It does not delete any mail, which stays on Microsoft's servers.
- Remove the account from the appSettings, then your account, then Delete Account. Your mail is untouched.
- Force close and reopen the appSwipe it away completely rather than returning to the home screen, so it does not resume from memory.
- Add the account againSign in fresh. This is where a new, valid token is issued.
- If it still fails, update or reinstallAn outdated app can fail against current sign-in requirements. Reinstalling is safe for the same reason removing the account is.
